Boston, Mass (June 15, 2016) — Back by popular demand, the Sponsors of Mass Save® - Cape Light Compact, Eversource, National Grid, and Unitil - are offering $50 to residential electric customers who recycle their old, outdated, and inefficient refrigerators or freezers through the Mass Save appliance recycling program. New for 2016, the program is offering residents the opportunity to recycle either their primary refrigerator or a secondary “garage” or “basement” refrigerator or freezer. 

The program encourages customers to reduce their energy use by recycling old refrigerators and freezers. People may not realize that older units consume as much as four times more energy than newer, more efficient models. Removing an old refrigerator or freezer can help you save up to $100 annually by decreasing household energy use. The Mass Save appliance recycling program offers free pickup of primary or secondary refrigerators and freezers. 

“Any time is a good time to recycle your old refrigerator or freezer, and now customers can take advantage of the $50 rebate,” said Alec O'Meara, Media Relations Manager for Unitil. “Customers can save up to $100 a year in energy costs by removing these inefficient units from their homes, and we make it easy by picking up the old units at no cost to the customer and delivering them to a recycling facility.” 

Customers can schedule a free home pickup by calling 1-877-889-4761 or visiting www.MassSave.com/Recycle. To qualify for the $50 incentive, customers must call or go online to schedule their recycling appointment, and the unit must be picked up by December 31st, 2016. 

Refrigerators and freezers must be plugged in, clean and empty, with an inside measurement of between 10 and 30 cubic feet (standard size for most units). A maximum of two units per household per calendar year will be accepted. 

After pickup, the old refrigerators and freezers are transported to an appliance recycling facility. Harmful materials such as capacitors and mercury-containing switches and thermostats are removed and properly disposed. 95 percent of the refrigerator’s components (including metal, plastic, glass and oil) are reclaimed for reuse in manufacturing new products. Even the foam insulation is safely incinerated to generate electricity.
