ENERGY STAR certified dishwashers offer innovative features that reduce energy and water consumption and improve performance.
Most of the energy used by dishwashers is for heating water. Today’s ENERGY STAR certified dishwashers are 15 percent more water-efficient and five percent more energy-efficient than non-certified models.
Mass Save® doesn’t currently offer incentives for this measure, but below are some resources to help you choose the most efficient option.

Features Include:
- Soil sensors – test how dirty dishes are throughout the wash and adjust the cycle accordingly
- Improved water filtration – removes food soil from the wash water
- More efficient jets – require less energy but still cover your dishes with detergent and water effectively
- Dish rack designs – allow for a more efficient way of laying out your dishes, cups, and silverware
Once you have your ENERGY STAR-certified dishwasher, here are some tips you can use to maximize your savings:
- Wash only full loads – dishwashers use the same amount of water whether they are half full or completely full
- Scrape, don’t rinse – rinsing dishes prior to putting them in the dishwasher can waste up to ten gallons of water per load. Newer dishwashers are designed for thorough cleaning, so scrape the food off and place dishes right into the dishwasher
- More efficient jets – require less energy, but still cover your dishes with detergent and water effectively
- Select the no-heat drying option – it will take a little longer to dry, but will reduce your dishwasher’s energy use significantly
