They will become familiar with heat-pumps as an energy-efficient alternative to either displace or replace a home’s existing HVAC system.
- Weatherization & Blower Door
- Course Description: Students will become familiar with standard industry terminology and the role of weatherization and air-tightness in energy-efficient building design and their benefits. Students will learn the mechanics of a blower door test, how to locate air leaks in the house, and determine where an air barrier or sealant should be placed.
- Duct Blaster & Air Sealing
- Course Description: Students will become acquainted with the terminology, components, and functionality of a Duct Blaster. They will be instructed on assembling and operating a Duct Blaster, gaining practical skills in detecting air leaks by touch, sight, and sound around air ducts.
- Energy Efficient Lighting & Design
- Course Description: This workshop offers an in-depth overview of efficient lighting and design principles to create energy-saving, well-lit environments. Students will explore foundational concepts in lighting, including the benefits of LED and smart lighting technologies, while learning to assess energy consumption and calculate potential savings. The workshop covers lighting fundamentals, energy efficiency strategies, core design principles, and emerging trends in sustainable lighting solutions.
- Solar Energy Basics
- Course Description: This workshop reinforces energy conservation principles and explores alternative energy sources, with a focus on solar photovoltaics (PV) and solar thermal technologies. Students will learn the fundamentals of solar panel installation and site assessment, including how to calculate a building's energy load and appropriately size a solar array. They will also identify key mechanical components of a solar array and understand their functions. Additionally, students will be introduced to training and employment opportunities in the rapidly growing solar energy industry.
