There are two components that need to be configured properly upon installation – the refrigerant charge and the airflow. These should be calibrated specifically to the home where the cooling system is installed.

Refrigerant Charge

Air conditioners come with a factory standard refrigerant charge of 15 feet of line set. If the distance between the outdoor and indoor units is 15 feet, this would be ok, but typically they’re farther apart and require additional refrigerant.

Undercharging can overheat the compressor, while overcharging can flood the compressor. Either way, incorrect refrigerant charge increases the likelihood of equipment malfunction and decreased cooling capacity and efficiency.

Airflow

High-efficiency air conditioners feature adjustable speed blowers that regulate airflow, but if these are left at factory default settings rather than set at the appropriate speed for your home or duct system, your comfort can become compromised.

If set too high, your system will struggle to dehumidify as it cools, leaving your house with that clammy feeling. If set too low, your air conditioner will need to run longer to reach a cool temperature and could also result in ice build-up and a damaged compressor to boot.
