THE SPONSORS OF MASS SAVE® RELEASE 2022 MASS SAVE: PATH TO CARBON NEUTRAL REPORT

Report highlights 2019-2021 Energy Efficiency Plan accomplishments in decarbonization, electrification and consumer participation; charts the next path forward 

BOSTON (February 28. 2023) – The Sponsors of Mass Save® today announced the release of the 2022 Path to Carbon Neutral Report, a comprehensive review of how the 2019-2021 term equitably delivered impressive energy savings and carbon reduction across Massachusetts through nation-leading programs.

The Sponsors focused on driving energy efficiency by incentivizing decarbonization and electrification and building robust community partnerships as part of the broader collaborative effort to help Massachusetts achieve its energy goals.

Despite inflation, COVID-19 and supply chain challenges, from 2019-2021 the Sponsors of Mass Save collectively delivered more than $2 billion in incentives directly to customers. Through extensive consumer outreach of hundreds of thousands of corporate, industrial, and residential customers, the plan saw an average annual reduction of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions of 700,000 short tons each year, the equivalent of taking 160,000 cars off the road for a year. Other cumulative savings included:

• 291 million MMBtu savings from all fuel types, equivalent to offsetting the total energy usage of over 250,000 Massachusetts homes for 10 years
• Nearly 33 million MWh in electricity savings, enough to offset the entire state of Rhode Island's usage for nearly 5 years
• 704 MW Summer Demand savings, enough to simultaneously charge over 100,000 Level 2 EVs
• Over 5 million residential and income-eligible household interactions
• More than 100,000 commercial and industrial participants
• 48,000 homes weatherized*
• 16,000 residential heat pumps delivered*

In support of Massachusetts' Net Zero by 2050 goals, the Sponsors of Mass Save have begun year two of the 2022-2024 Energy Efficiency Plan. This plan includes an increased emphasis on workforce development including a new internship program, enhanced incentives for customers to displace fossil-heating systems with electrification options, and a robust package of grants and programs to support customers living in an environmental justice communities.
