Renovations & Additions

Build energy efficiency into your renovation or addition to drive comfort and savings.
Get start-to-finish support from a certified HERS rater to help you optimize design, select efficient technologies, and access incentives for your renovation or addition.

The Sponsors of Mass Save provide incentives for incorporating energy-efficient upgrades to renovations or additions of existing homes in Massachusetts. Eligible upgrades may include, but are not limited to:

  • Insulation
  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
  • Water heating equipment
  • Air and duct sealing

In alignment with the Commonwealth’s climate policy and goals, the Sponsors of Mass Save are discontinuing incentives for homes that utilize equipment powered by natural gas, oil and propane. Projects enrolled in the Renovations & Additions program must be submitted for incentive processing by September 30, 2024, to receive incentives for natural gas, oil or propane equipment. As of October 1, 2024, only electrification equipment and improvements to the thermal envelope will be incentivized. Contact [email protected] for more information.

  1. Confirm Eligibility

View the Eligibility Tab to confirm the eligibility requirements.

  2. Fill Out Interest Form

Get started by submitting an Interest Form. Within a few days, a Sponsor representative will contact you to proceed.

If you have any questions, please call 1-866-527-SAVE (7283) or email [email protected].

  3. Schedule Preliminary Home Visit

Contact an approved certified Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Rater at the start of your project. During a preliminary site visit, the Rater will review your plans, estimate possible energy savings, and may recommend additional energy efficiency upgrades. These visits take about one to two hours.

  4. Receive Energy Report

Customers typically receive an estimate of savings and available incentive amounts after the preliminary site visit.

If you are installing new insulation, contact your Rater to schedule an insulation inspection, or to receive instructions on how to complete a remote inspection.

The insulation inspection should take place once the insulation work is complete but before wallboard has gone up.

  5. Schedule Final Inspection

As your project nears completion, set up a final site visit with your Rater. They will finalize all the details and perform diagnostic testing as needed.

  6. Receive Incentives

After the final inspection, you will receive an incentive completion notification and a post-participation survey via email. Within 10 to 12 weeks of your final inspection, you will receive an incentive check in the mail.
